Safari from Cape Town: what a day trip really involves
Two reserves near Cape Town, what they say about distance and day options, and what to ask before you book.
How far and how long
Two reserves are usually offered for a day from Cape Town. Aquila Private Game Reserve states that it is just under 2 hours from the city, and Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve states less than 2.5 hours. Add the drive in both directions to the time spent at the reserve.
What the reserves say they offer
Aquila lists lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. Its day options include half-day safaris (for example 07:00 to 12:00 or 12:00 to 16:30), a sunset safari (15:00 to 19:00) and full-day trips from 09:00 to 16:30, with quad bike and horseback variants. Inverdoorn advertises the Big Five on 10,000 hectares and describes its setting as malaria-free; its own site lists overnight stays, so check how a day visit is sold. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Questions to ask before you book
Which reserve and which option, what time pickup is, whether meals and reserve entry fees are included, and the cancellation and weather rules. The times above are times at the reserve, not pickup times. The operator confirms the final details.
Where this comes from
The reserves’ own websites (aquilasafari.com and inverdoorn.com), read on 17 October 2026. Prices change, so none are quoted here.
